The Pilates exercises and equipment were invented by Joseph Pilates in the early to mid 20th century. The exercises are designed to stretch and strengthen muscles without adding bulk. Pilates is a total body work-out that creates overall body balance. Benefits include increased strength and flexibility and improved posture, stability, balance and coordination.
Anyone can do Pilates. We have a range of programs appropriate for all ages and fitness levels, from elite athletes to those who are out-of-shape or have physical problems. Pilates is wonderful for people with previous injuries or disabilities who find other forms of exercise difficult.
The heart of Pilates is training the strength and alignment of the deep postural (or "core") muscles, so that every movement begins with the engagement of these stabilizing muscles. Pilates requires concentration and mental focus, so it is also a mental work-out. The focus on breath helps to increase lung capacity and creates more functional breathing patterns. If performing your daily activities has become hard, Pilates will help to restore your abilities.
Body & Soul Pilates exercises are done on the floor with mats and props or on the specialized Pilates equipment. The equipment provides resistance to increase strength as well as assistance to help you with difficult exercises. You may choose private or group instruction, depending on your needs and preferences.
You will feel rejuvenated after your Pilates work-out. Gradually your body will change and you will look and feel your best.
